What Is Flamenco?

Flamenco is a Spanish art form combining dance (baile), singing (cante) and guitar (toque), originating from the Andalusian region of southern Spain. It is deeply connected to Romani and Moorish cultural traditions and is recognised by UNESCO as an Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.

The dance is characterised by intricate footwork (zapateado), expressive arm and hand movements (braceo and floreos), intense emotional expression (duende) and a powerful physical presence. Each palos — or musical form — demands different technical and expressive qualities from the dancer.

Flamenco takes years to develop, and its deep relationship between movement, music and song makes it one of the most demanding and rewarding dance traditions to study.
