What Is Kathak?

Kathak is a classical North Indian dance form that originated with storytelling traditions in the temples and courts of northern India. The name derives from the Sanskrit word for storyteller, reflecting the dance's roots as a narrative art form.

The style is characterised by intricate footwork (tatkar) involving rapid rhythmic stamping, expressive facial expressions and hand gestures (abhinaya and hasta mudras), pirouetting turns (chakkar), and graceful arm and eye movements.

Kathak exists in two principal schools or gharanas — the Lucknow gharana, which emphasises lyrical grace and courtly refinement, and the Jaipur gharana, which is known for vigorous footwork and powerful rhythmic precision.
