Studios usually shape the lessons around how much you want to do and how long you have.

The song usually decides the style. A teacher will listen to your track and suggest what fits, but these are the usual starting points:

• Salsa and bachata for warmer, rhythmic tracks.
• Argentine tango for a dramatic, close-hold first dance.

• Wear the right shoes. Rehearse in shoes of a similar heel height and sole to those you will wear on the day.
• Practise the full song. Learn the length you will actually dance, not just the first minute.

• Agree a plan B. A shorter routine you can fall back on removes the pressure.
• Ask the studio about recording. A phone video of each lesson makes practice at home easier.
