What Is Zumba?

Zumba is a fitness programme created in Colombia in the 1990s by choreographer Alberto Pérez. It combines Latin and international music with dance movements drawn from salsa, merengue, cumbia, reggaeton and other styles, adapted for group fitness use.

The format is designed to be non-intimidating and accessible — participants follow along with an instructor rather than learning formal dance technique, making it suitable for all ages and fitness levels.

Zumba has become a global phenomenon with licensed instructors in over 180 countries and a range of format variants including Zumba Gold for seniors, Zumba Kids and aqua Zumba.
